How long does a made to order sofa take in the UK?

If you are buying a sofa for the first time in a while, the lead time is usually the part that catches you out. You choose the shape, you choose the fabric, and then you find out the sofa arrives in the spring. This guide explains where that time goes, what you can reasonably expect in the UK, and how to judge a short lead time without assuming it means a worse sofa.

How long does a made to order sofa take in the UK?

Published UK made-to-order lead times commonly run 6–12 weeks. At Furniture Done, delivery is typically 1–2 weeks to mainland UK, and typically 1–4 weeks for the Payton range.

Two things drive the difference. The first is where the sofa is made. The second is how the order moves once you have placed it. Neither of those is about cutting a corner on the sofa itself.

Delivery timing also shifts a little around holiday periods such as Christmas — expect it to run slightly longer then. That is why the word "typically" travels with every window we publish. We would rather give you an honest range than a best-case figure.

Why does a made-to-order sofa take any time at all?

Because the sofa does not exist when you order it. It is built for your order, in your fabric, and that sequence has real steps in it.

Here is what that means in practice.

• It is built for your order. There is no finished sofa on a shelf waiting for a buyer. The frame, the seats and the covers are made for the configuration you chose.
• The fabric is cut to order. Your colour and your fabric are cut for your sofa, in the size you picked. That is the step that makes the choice yours, and it is also a step that cannot start before you order.
• Delivery has to be booked. A sofa is not a parcel. Someone has to agree a day with you, and that conversation takes a slot in the calendar.

None of that is unusual. What varies enormously between brands is what sits around those steps.

Why do some sofas take 12 weeks?

Long lead times usually come from distance and queueing, not from the build itself. A sofa made overseas has to be produced, containerised, shipped, cleared and moved inland before anybody can book a delivery date.

That shipping leg is measured in weeks on its own, and it sits in front of every other step. Add a production queue and a warehouse booking window and 6–12 weeks stops being surprising.

Why are Furniture Done sofas quicker?

Our sofas are made in the UK, so there is no shipping-container leg between the build and your living room. They are still made to order — they are just made to order on a short line, close to you.

That is the whole of the explanation. We are not claiming a faster build or a special process. We are saying that a sofa built in the UK for a UK customer skips the longest single stage in most other lead times, and we pass that back to you as typically 1–2 weeks to mainland UK.

The Payton range is the exception at typically 1–4 weeks. We publish that separately rather than averaging it into one flattering number.

Is a fast sofa a worse sofa?

No — but speed on its own tells you nothing, so it is worth knowing what you are comparing. Flat-pack and warehouse sofas ship fastest because they are already built and boxed before anyone orders one.

Made to order means the opposite: the sofa is built for your order, in the fabric and configuration you chose, after you choose it. That is normally the slower route, which is why long lead times and made-to-order sofas usually travel together in the UK.

What happens after you order

You get a confirmation, a 24-hour window to change or cancel free of charge, and contact from us from purchase through to delivery. You also keep your statutory right to cancel, from the moment you order until 14 days after delivery.

• Straight after you order. Check the confirmation against what you meant to buy — fabric, colour, size, configuration. Changes are easiest now.
• Within 24 hours. You can change or cancel the order free of charge. The build starts the day you buy, so tell us early if something is wrong.
• While it is being made. We stay in touch from purchase to delivery. If you want to ask something, there are real people in the Customer Service team and they will answer you.
• Before delivery. We arrange the day with you.
• After delivery. You can still cancel for any reason up to 14 days after the sofa arrives. You do not have to give a reason.

How to plan around a sofa lead time

Work backwards from the date you need it, and order early enough that a typical window still lands comfortably inside it. Then deal with the two things that cause most late surprises: fit and fabric.

Measure your doorway, hallway and any turn on the stairs before you order, not after. And order fabric samples if colour matters to you — screens render fabric differently and your room's light changes it again. It is the cheapest way to avoid the one mistake a short lead time cannot rescue you from.
